What is your relationship to the present moment?
“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am sure you have heard this isn’t anything you can do now about your past, and plan for your future. Many of us spend time focused on the past ~ our mistakes, our conversations, our moments. Many of us spend doing so much to prepare for the future ~ future money, future plans, future conversations, and moments. How many of us really spend focused on the present moment?
What does that truly mean ~ to focus our attention on the present?
It is inevitable think of all three areas; but where do you spend your time and energy concentrating on? Sure, we need to learn from our past and we need to prepare for our future; however, our past has already happened and the future is uncertain. It does practice to remember that the present moment is the only moment we truly have. When we spend time in other “times and memories”, we miss out on opportunities that we could be embracing for our success, for our peacefulness, and our clarity.
What are the benefits to focusing on the present?
Reduced Stress, Increased Enjoyment, Better Bonds with Others, and Focused Energy on Projects.
There is no single way or methodology will get you more efficient to being present ~ it just takes practice. Some rather easy ways to being this practice:
1. As you walk, begin to feel how your muscles feel and the sounds of the rocks or pavement underneath your feet.
2. Sit outside; identify each color before you. Take a few deep breaths, clothes your eyes and recognize the sounds around you.
3. When you are with someone, look in to their eyes. Focus your energy in listening to every word they say. Ignore any other sounds or distractions for at least 10 -15 minutes.
If you have done this in the past, but you have begun to loose a sense of centered-ness, just go back to the basics for being present for yourself.
